Cerebral Palsy Symptoms Are Reduced with Stem Cell Therapy

Cerebral palsy can be a devastating disease for a patient and their loved ones. A physical disability can be especially frustrating, as you are unable to do so much. Eating, moving, sleeping and communicating can seem nearly impossible to manage.  This disease is incurable, and the cause is not yet known, making it even more frustrating to navigate. There are medications, therapies, and surgeries that can make daily life easier, but these can be costly as it is a life long disease. Stem cell therapy may be able to reduce some of the symptoms of cerebral palsy. Recent studies have shown improvements in patients with cerebral palsy who have been treated with stem cells.

What Is Stem Cell Therapy?

Stem cell therapy involves injecting stem cells into injured areas. Stem cells are the blueprint for all of the body’s cells. There are multiple ways to ethically source stem cells like embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells, adult cells turned into embryonic stem cells, and perinatal stem cells. Stem cell therapy helps transform cells into the cells of the injured area and then heal it by creating newer, healthier tissue.

What Is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is caused by an injury to the brain that happens during pregnancy or shortly after birth.  Cerebral palsy affects people in different ways because different parts of the brain can be injured, however, it always has some impact on the person’s movements because of the damaged signaling from the brain. It is the most common childhood physical disability affecting movement and posture. People with cerebral palsy might have unpredictable movements. Their muscles may be stiff, weak, tight, or tremor. People with severe cerebral palsy may also have difficulties with swallowing, breathing, head and neck control, bladder and bowel control, eating and have dental and digestive problems.

How Can Stem Cell Therapy Reduce My Cerebral Palsy Symptoms? Stem cells have been shown to have regenerative and growth stimulating properties. Recent studies have shown patients with cerebral palsy who have received stem cell treatments have better cognitive, functional, and bladder and bowel control. But these studies suggest that the patients still need mental and physical stimulation to regain this control. Academic learning and physical therapy in patients with cerebral palsy should compliment stem cell therapy. However, it is promising research because there is no cure or medication that can improve this condition. Stem cell therapy will be the first therapy to improve the symptoms of cerebral palsy.
