Amniotic Stem Cell Therapy Focuses on Cause of Neuropathy

The Regeneration Center of Thailand reported that there are approximately 175 million people in the world suffering from peripheral neuropathy. This condition develops over time because of damage that occurs to the peripheral nervous system. This damage can be the result of diabetes, exposure to toxins, hypothyroidism, an autoimmune disease, environmental factors, or genetic predisposition. When the peripheral nervous system is damaged, the body’s communication network is disrupted. The brain has difficulty communicating with the spinal cord and other parts of the body. This is why a person suffering from peripheral neuropathy has difficulty with muscle movement.

Some of the issues a person with peripheral neuropathy can suffer from include:

  • Bladder control issues
  • Difficulty generating muscle control
  • Heart problems
  • Digestive issues
  • Inability to sweat or reduced sweating
  • Erectile dysfunction or loss of sexual function
  • Abnormal blood pressure

The symptoms can occur over a few days, or they can last for years. Regardless, the condition can be painful and seriously interfere with the quality of life. That is why doctors around the world are exploring different treatment options. Researchers are looking for effective treatments that can improve patients’ quality of life. Amniotic stem cell therapy is one of those treatments.

Amniotic Stem Cells and Neuropathy

The most common treatments are IV immunoglobulin therapy, high-dose steroids, and therapeutic plasma exchange. Pain medications are also used to cover the symptoms rather than targeting the cause. Amniotic stem cell therapy is opening the door to a modern treatment option for patients that suffer from nerve damage and pain due to neuropathy because it addresses the cause.

Stem cell therapy is effective because the cells have the ability to replace damaged cells. They take the form of the damaged cells but in a healthy form. The affected area is targeted and healing can occur. This process makes up for the body’s inability to create enough healthy stem cells to heal the affected area.

Amniotic stem cells also have anti-inflammatory properties, which reduces inflammation and pain. In one study, a group of female subjects with an average age of 55 was evaluated throughout the amniotic stem cell treatment process. The women had neuropathy-related pain that had lasted between 4 months and 6 years. Up to 162 million stem cells had been injected into each subject. Amniotic tissues have a high concentration of stem cells, so it is easy to direct a high number of cells to the affected area.

None of the subjects reported any local tissue or systemic side effects. After 6 months of treatment,55 percent of the subjects experienced reduced pain and could reduce the use of their anti-neuropathic medication. The average pain score before treatment was 7.5. In 6 months, the average pain score was 4.3.

Safe and Well Tolerated

So far, studies are showing that the use of amniotic stem cells in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy is very promising. Pain reduction is significant, and the treatment is safe and well-tolerated. In addition, the ability to reduce the use of anti-neuropathic medication is beneficial since such medications can have unpleasant side effects.
